A federal lawsuit filed in 2022 because of the sinking of the cargo ship Golden Ray, The case of the oil tanker that was carrying $142 million in cargo when it capsized off the coast of Georgia has been settled.

The Marshall Islands-flagged ro-ro vehicle carrier sank on September 8, 2019, after leaving the port of Brunswick en route to Baltimore. It carried nearly 4,200 vehicles. Local shrimpers, crabbers and business owners sued the vessel’s owners and operators, but the suit was dismissed Monday after those involved agreed to settle the problem.

Details of the settlement were not publicly available.

The National Transportation Safety Board determined that an error by the first officer led to capsize. The Golden Ray also carried hundreds of thousands of gallons of fuel, according to the 2022 lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia. Fires broke out for nearly 24 hours after the ship capsized, according to the now-dismissed complaint.

It took crews more than two years to remove the wreckage, which caused fires and “numerous” oil spills, the lawsuit says. A spill prompted health officials to issue warnings to beachgoers and fishermen.

The consequences of the ship’s sinking have harmed the environment and the livelihoods of local fishermen, the complaint claims.
