Georgia police are currently conducting an investigation into the tragic death of a college student whose body was discovered in a wooded area on the University of Georgia’s main campus in Athens. The victim, identified as a student at Augusta University’s College of Nursing in Athens, has not been publicly named, and no suspects have been arrested.
According to UGA Police Chief Jeffrey L. Clark, the search for the young woman commenced after a concerned individual reported that their friend had gone missing while out for a run at the intramural fields. Subsequently, an officer located the victim unconscious with visible injuries in a wooded area near Lake Herrick, prompting medics to pronounce her deceased. The cause of death has not been disclosed at this time.
In light of the tragic incident, classes at both UGA and Augusta University were canceled to allow students and staff to process the events. University officials have encouraged individuals to utilize counseling and psychiatric services as needed.
This incident marks the first homicide on UGA grounds in decades, with the last similar case occurring in 1983.
