Man dies of apparent drowning at lake on South Shore, DA says

Authorities in Massachusetts are investigating the suspected drowning of a man in a Halifax lake after the canoe he was in capsized.Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said that shortly before 11 a.m. Sunday, Halifax police received a 911 call reporting a capsized canoe with several people in the water at the East Lake boat ramp at 47 White Island Road.First responders found that three people, an adult and two children, had exited the water safely, but learned that another adult had not resurfaced.Halifax police officers and firefighters requested assistance from the Plymouth County Technical Rescue Dive Team and several local fire departments, including Duxbury and Marshfield, as well as the Massachusetts State Police detective unit assigned to Cruz’s office.Cruz said that shortly after 12:40 p.m., the dive team found the man. The victim was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Plymouth, where he was pronounced dead.”Crushing. Absolutely crushing. My friends and I were all sick to our stomachs and near tears,” said Halifax resident Julie Lang. “It’s hard to concentrate on other things. I don’t wish this on anyone.”The victim is not being identified at this time, the district attorney said.The incident is being investigated by Halifax police, state police and the Massachusetts Environmental Police.Halifax police shut down the northbound and southbound sides of Holmes Street, which is part of Route 36, for several hours while dive teams were conducting their search on East Lake.Related story:
