TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A Georgia couple was arrested in Florida Saturday after deputies said they were intoxicated and asleep on a beach while their children were swimming nearby unsupervised, according to NBC affiliate WESH.

WESH reported the couple, 27-year-old Timothy Stephens and his fiancé Alyssia Langley, were found asleep on a towel on Daytona Beach. The couple had various children’s toys around them but no kids in sight, per reports.

Deputies reportedly found empty beer cans, a bottle of Crown Royal whiskey, and other open alcoholic beverages with the couple.

WESH reported the couple were in a “state of confusion” when awoken by deputies, and neither could give a location for the children with them or point out the children nearby.

Deputies were able to lead the couple to a nearby pool where the children, five and seven years old, were swimming unsupervised.

“I just can’t imagine that you could be so reckless and negligent and just don’t really give a (expletive) that you could get that ossified, that you don’t know where you’re at, you’re completely passed out, and anything can happen to those kids, anything in the world,” said Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Stephens, the children’s legal guardian, said he shared responsibility for the children with Langley, who is not biologically related to them, according to WESH.

Stephens is facing two counts of child neglect and possession of alcohol on the beach. WESH reported Stephens tried to run during the arrest and fell unconscious after tripping and falling on the hard, packed sand.

Stephens was treated at a nearby hospital and is facing charges for the escape attempt as well, per reports. Langley is also facing child neglect charges.
