“I am a big advocate of diving into the unknown and the thrill of meeting new people in a new chapter,” he says. “But I also understand that in the undertaking of a job as emotionally demanding as teaching, especially in an underserved school, I wanted to make those factors a little bit easier on myself and stick with something that would bring me comfort.”

This quote perfectly encapsulates the rationale behind his decision. It highlights the balance he sought between the exciting prospects of a new adventure and the necessary comfort and reasonable stability as well.

His Day-to-Day

Olegnowicz-Cruz’s daily routine is demanding but structured. His day begins at 7:30 a.m. with lesson preparation, followed by a full day of individual instruction. He works directly with students, both in his classroom and in their general education classrooms, offering specialized support. Beyond direct instruction, he also spends considerable time lesson-planning, collaborating with colleagues, communicating with families, and monitoring students’ progress. The average day lasts until about 6 p.m. which then allows time for trips to the gym for some physical and mental decompressing.

Although his schedule is meticulously planned, it’s not without its challenges. Unreliable transportation for some students can disrupt the carefully structured timeline. The flexibility necessitated by this factor can make even a meticulously planned day feel more demanding. Nonetheless, the most rewarding aspect, he shares, is seeing his students’ development, particularly in reading: “That’s got to be the most emotionally rewarding part of the job, is teaching kids how to read.”

Making an Impact

Olegnowicz-Cruz’s decision to teach was partly inspired by his own positive experiences with supportive teachers. Having immigrated from Mexico to Ohio at a young age, he learned English in the public school system and cultivated leadership skills through extracurricular activities. He was a president of several student groups in college. Now, he hopes to replicate that positive influence in the lives of his students, encouraging them to set and achieve their goals.

Future Aspirations

Upon completing his two-year commitment with TFA, Olegnowicz-Cruz will earn a $13,000 education stipend, which he plans to utilize towards his MBA or a master’s degree in leadership. Furthermore, he has secured a business consulting internship, positioning him favorably for his long-term career objectives. He is particularly interested in economic development and expanding access to quality education globally.

“The job that I have right now is super rewarding,” he says, “and I know that everything that I’m learning, not just in terms of organizing my day-to-day, but stakeholder management, working with data, all these transferable skills are a big asset to where I want to go and the impact that I want to drive on a systemic level.”

Olegnowicz-Cruz’s journey demonstrates that a career in education is not mutually exclusive with long-term career ambitions. It illustrates a unique approach to career building that integrates personal fulfillment with professional advancement. His choice suggests a broader trend where young professionals are seeking paths that combine meaningful contributions with realistic career progression and financial stability.
