Elon Musk Faces Backlash for Retweeting Parody Kamala Harris Ad Without Disclaimers

Elon Musk, the owner of X (formerly Twitter), has stirred controversy by retweeting a parody campaign ad targeting Vice President Kamala Harris without labeling it as misleading, potentially violating his own platform’s rules against manipulated media. The altered video, posted by a YouTube channel labeled "Mr Reagan," uses AI-generated voice technology to make it sound like Harris is making disparaging remarks about President Biden and herself, while showcasing footage from her actual campaign videos. The ad has garnered millions of views across platforms, raising concerns about the potential for AI-generated disinformation to influence the upcoming election.

Key Takeaways:

  • Musk retweeted a video that uses AI to mimic Harris’s voice, falsely portraying her as criticizing President Biden and herself.
  • The video was labeled a parody on YouTube, but Musk did not include any such disclaimer in his retweet.
  • The incident highlights the potential dangers of AI-generated deepfakes and their impact on political discourse.
  • Critics accuse Musk of violating X’s policy on misleading media and of contributing to the spread of misinformation.
  • The incident comes amidst increasing concerns about the role of social media in the 2024 election and the potential for AI manipulation to influence voter perception.

A Parody Gone Viral?

The video in question, initially posted on YouTube by "Mr Reagan," utilizes footage from Harris’s actual campaign video interspersed with AI-generated audio, designed to sound like the Vice President. In the altered audio, Harris is falsely portrayed as calling President Biden "senile" and labeling herself as an "incompetent" presidential candidate. The audio goes on to accuse Harris of being a “diversity hire” who relies on race and gender-based politics.

The original Harris campaign video, which the altered video draws from, focuses on a message of unity and freedom. Harris narrates the video, speaking about the importance of individual choice in a democratic society, before seguing into Beyoncé’s powerful anthem “Freedom.”

The manipulated video, which went viral after being retweeted by Elon Musk, lacks any such message of unity, instead choosing to promote an agenda of division and negativity.

Concerns Over Deepfakes and Misinformation

While the video was labeled as a parody on YouTube, Musk’s retweet lacked any such labeling or disclaimer, raising concerns about potential violations of X’s own policies.

The incident comes at a time when AI-generated content, or so-called deepfakes, are increasingly being used for misinformation campaigns. Experts like Alexios Mantzarlis, Director of the Security, Trust, and Safety Initiative at Cornell Tech, believe that we are likely to witness a significant increase in such "surface-level deception" leading up to the November election.

"In recent-ish elections in Argentina, India and elsewhere, we saw deepfakes being used primarily for this type of surface-level deception that’s more akin to trolling memes than to legitimate misinformation," Mantzarlis explained. "I expect we’ll see plenty of this in the US for the next 100 days" until the November election.

X’s Policy and Potential Violations

X’s own policies clearly state that "you may not share synthetic, manipulated, or out-of-context media that may deceive or confuse people and lead to harm (‘misleading media’)" and that the platform may "label posts containing misleading media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context."

By retweeting the video without providing any disclaimer or labeling it as manipulated, Musk could be seen as violating these policies.

Political Reactions and Calls for Accountability

Harris’s campaign spokesperson, Mia Ehrenberg, condemned Musk and former President Donald Trump, stating, "We believe the American people want the real freedom, opportunity, and security Vice President Harris is offering; not the fake, manipulated lies of Elon Musk and Donald Trump."

Senator Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator from Minnesota, echoed these concerns, calling for X to take action. In a post on X, Klobuchar wrote, "If ⁦@elonmusk and X let this go and don’t label it as altered AI content, they will not only be violating X’s own rules, they’ll be unleashing an entire election season of fake AI voice and image-altered content with no limits, regardless of party."

However, X and Musk have yet to publicly respond to these accusations.

Musk’s Recent Political Activity

The incident comes after a series of controversial moves by Musk regarding political content on X. Just weeks earlier, Musk formally endorsed Donald Trump for President in the wake of a recent assassination attempt against the former president.

This recent retweet of the manipulated Harris video, alongside his previous statements and actions, further suggests that Musk is leveraging his platform to promote a specific political agenda, potentially at the expense of factual accuracy and responsible content moderation.

The Future of AI and Disinformation

The widespread use of AI-generated content in political campaigns presents a significant challenge for social media platforms and regulators. The ability to create convincing deepfakes that manipulate audio and video content raises concerns about the potential for widespread misinformation and its impact on public trust and democratic processes.

As AI technology continues to advance, it is critical for platforms like X to actively police the spread of disinformation and implement measures to ensure the authenticity and reliability of content shared on their sites. Failure to do so risks undermining public trust in information and fueling the spread of misinformation, ultimately impacting the integrity of future elections.

The issue of AI-generated content in political campaigns is one that will only grow in importance as technology becomes more sophisticated. It is crucial for policymakers, social media companies, and users alike to engage in ongoing dialogue and collaboration to address these challenges, protect the integrity of our democratic processes, and ensure a more informed and accountable public discourse.
