Meta Just Fixed the Quest 3’s Big Controller-Tracking Problem

I’ve been hating my new Meta Quest 3. Sure, it has better color passthrough, it’s more comfortable, and the display looks better. But whenever I played Supernatural or other games like it, it would lose track of my controllers and ruin my experience.

Thankfully, Meta just fixed this significant problem.

With the Quest 3, Meta made notable changes to its VR system. Besides color passthrough, automatic boundary detection, and a return to a PID (Pupillary distance), one of the most apparent changes arrived with the Quest 3’s controllers. Previous Quest controllers (and most VR controllers) have a large ring that houses tracking LEDs. Meta promised that it had found a way to track the new controllers without the tracking LED ring or the Quest Pro‘s camera in a controller solution. That made for a more compact and comfortable controller.

But while the new system seemed to work well in some games, dozens of Reddit threads told a different story. In games and apps that required fast movement, like Supernatural, IB Cricket, and Beatsaber, the Meta Quest 3 would lose one of the controllers altogether.

I can personally attest to this problem, as my family loves both Supernatural and Beatsaber. The problem seemed particularly bad in Supernatural; within 10 seconds of starting a workout, the game would pause and inform me that the right controller was disconnected. The odd thing is, I’d immediately be able to unpause with my right controller, only to have the problem occur again 10 seconds later. For some reason, this problem never happened with my left controller. Naturally, I tried troubleshooting steps like changing batteries with no luck. My wife went back to the Meta Quest 2 in complete frustration, and threatened to return the Quest 3.

Meta acknowledged the problem and promised to investigate a fix. And the good news is the company managed a pretty fast turnaround on that process. While working on this article and grabbing screenshots, my controllers automatically updated. I didn’t need to do anything; the Meta Quest 3 just informed me it shut down my controllers for an update. And after that process completed, I couldn’t reproduce the issues anymore. I’ve tried several tracks on Supernatural, starting with the ones I had the most problems with, and the controllers stayed connected.

So, if you’ve been frustrated with your Meta Quest 3 and switched back to the Quest 2, give the updated model another chance. You may need to give it a minute to update the controllers (though if your set is always on, it may have already happened), but once you do, you may have a much better experience.
