Investing.com – Australian shares were lower after the close on Tuesday, as losses in , and sectors dragged shares lower.

At the close in Sydney, the price fell 0.41%.

The best performers of the session on the were Mesoblast Ltd (ASX:), which rose 43.94% or 0.15 points to trade at 0.47 at the close. Meanwhile, Star Entertainment Group Ltd (ASX:) added 4.76% or 0.03 points to end at 0.55 and St Barbara Ltd (ASX:) rose 4.55% or 0.01 points to 0.17 at the end of the session.

The worst performers of the session were Atlas Arteria (ASX:), which fell 4.87% or 0.26 points to trade at 5.08 at the close. Idp Education Ltd. (ASX:) fell 4.59% or 0.83 points to end at 17.27 and Seven Group Holdings Ltd (ASX:) fell 4.09% or 1.69 points to 39.62.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones on the Sydney Stock Exchange 637 to 476 with 341 ending unchanged.

Atlas Arteria (ASX:) shares fell to 3-year low; down 4.87% or 0.26 to 5.08. Idp Education Ltd (ASX:) shares fell to 3-year low; down 4.59% or 0.83 to 17.27.

The index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/ASX 200 options, was down 4.68% at 10.55.

Gold futures for April delivery fell 0.20%, or 4.30, to $2,172.10 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, crude oil for May delivery rose 0.10% or 0.08 to $82.03 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 0.13%. or 0.11 to trade at $86.19 per barrel.

AUD/USD was unchanged 0.02% at 0.65, while AUD/JPY was down 0.03% at 99.00.

U.S. dollar index futures fell 0.05% to 103.88.
