SUV with kids inside rolls down hill, through sports field, police say

Cohasset police say three people, including two children, were injured when an out-of-control sport utility vehicle rolled across a sports field where children were playing in the Massachusetts town.Police Chief William Quigley said that at about 10:40 a.m. Saturday, his department received numerous 911 calls about the vehicle traveling across the front sports field at the Cohasset Middle/High School on Pond Street.Responding officers learned that the SUV, a 2017 Chevrolet Suburban, had rolled out of a parking space, down a steep hill and onto a soccer field, where kindergarten-aged children were playing lacrosse at the time, according to Quigley.Quigley said coaches and parents were able to quickly move the children out of the path of the vehicle, which did not have a driver inside, but was carrying two small children who were inside car seats.The police chief said the SUV struck a lacrosse coach as it traveled across the sports field before it crashed through a chainlink fence, crossed Pond Street and eventually came to a stop in a yard near 150 Pond St.Cohasset Fire Department paramedics treated the two small children inside the SUV and the coach who was struck by the vehicle at the scene. Quigley said the children and the coach suffered minor injuries, and that no one was transported to the hospital in connection with the incident.”Due to the quick actions of coaches and bystanders, we averted a major tragedy today,” Quigley said in a statement.Quigley said no charges have been filed at this time, but noted that the incident remains under investigation.
