Oil edges higher as Middle East risks offset U.S. demand concerns

Oil prices slid in early Asian trade on Thursday as a surprise build in U.S. stockpiles fueled fears about slow demand from the top oil consumer, though worries a potential expansion of the Gaza war may disrupt Middle East supplies capped declines.

Oil prices edged up on Thursday as supply disruption risks from rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East helped to counter demand fears after a surprise build in U.S. stockpiles.

Brent crude oil futures gained 76 cents, or 0.9%, to $86.01 a barrel by 0930 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 69 cents, or 0.9%, to $81.60.
