Firefly’s Rocketry Prowess

The core of Firefly’s strategy lies in its powerful and reliable rocket technology. The Alpha rocket, a 95-foot-tall vehicle, is designed to launch approximately 1,000 kilograms of payload to orbit at a cost of $15 million per launch. The company has already conducted five Alpha launches, achieving orbital success on two occasions. The upcoming MLV (Medium Launch Vehicle), a significantly larger rocket at 183 feet tall, aims to carry 16,300 kilograms to orbit. Developed in collaboration with Northrop Grumman as a successor to the Antares rockets, the MLV promises to be a game-changer, expanding Firefly’s capabilities to cater to a wider range of missions.

Engine Technology and Reusability

Kim is particularly excited about Firefly’s engine technology, citing the **Reaver engines** powering Alpha and their scaled-up counterpart, the **Miranda engines**, for the MLV. “**We’re making huge strides on MLV,**” he said. “**We’ve had 50 Miranda engine tests already.**” While Alpha is not reusable, Kim highlighted Firefly’s strategic decision to design the MLV with reusability in mind, mirroring some of SpaceX’s approach with their Falcon 9 rockets, though not striving for immediate return-to-launch-site functionality. “**We want to get some launches to orbit first before we tackle the ‘return to launch site’ part of it,”** he added. **”I do believe that reusability is going to help along the [launch] cadence of the MLV program.”**

Alpha Launch Cadence and Backlog

Firefly has already secured a substantial backlog of Alpha launches, exceeding 50 contracts, with significant clients that include Lockheed Martin and L3Harris. This includes launches for the U.S. Space Force’s responsive space missions such as **Victus Haze**. Kim plans to aggressively increase the Alpha launch cadence, aiming for four to six launches in 2025, and doubling that annually until they reach a rate of 24 launches per year. This ambitious plan involves focusing on infrastructure expansion, as evident in the doubling of Rocket Ranch’s floor space this year, totaling over **200,000 square feet**.

Beyond Rockets: Spacecraft and Lunar Landers

Firefly’s ambitions extend beyond launch vehicles. The company is also developing a comprehensive portfolio of spacecraft, including the Elytra line of orbital transfer vehicles and the highly anticipated Blue Ghost lunar lander.

Blue Ghost Lunar Lander

Scheduled for launch in December 2024, the Blue Ghost moon lander represents a significant milestone for Firefly. This seven-foot-tall, twelve-foot-diameter lander will carry 10 research payloads under NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, as part of a $93 million contract. Successful completion of this mission would solidify Firefly’s status as a key player in lunar exploration. “**Any time you go to the moon, the whole world is watching. And when we land that thing, like Simone Biles sticks the landing in the Olympics, we’re going to be a different company,**” Kim stated.

Firefly’s Elytra line of orbital transfer vehicles (space tugs) – Dawn, Dusk, and Dark – are designed to transfer spacecraft and payloads into various orbits, from low Earth orbit to lunar orbits.
