AMD RX 7900 may face shortages in China due to RTX 4090 ban

Chinese gamers looking for cheaper alternatives.

Recently, there were rumors that the Radeon RX 7900 graphics card series may be banned in China, following the ban on the RTX 4090 GPU from NVIDIA. The rumors weren’t backed up by any official data and are most likely rooted in Dell’s sales guidance for pre-built systems that are shipped to China. Even if this advisory was true, it wouldn’t affect DIY sales.

Board Channels have confirmed now that there is no ban planned on Radeon RX 7900 series and none of the AIBs were notified of any plans for RX 7900 sale banning in China. Of course, even if there was a ban, it would not impact sales of these cards, but rather imports. However, the most important thing to know is that neither is true.

According to the same report, AMD is having a hard time getting more Navi 31 GPUs for Chinese board partners because more people are interested now that RTX 4090 imports were banned two weeks ago. The sources on the Board Channel say that RX 7900 sales are increasing in China and there is already a shortage of GPUs for board partners (but not yet for consumers).

This [RTX 4090] restriction has led to a heightened demand for the AMD 7900XTX and 7900XT series, resulting in a critically scarce GPU supply situation. Ultimately, AMD is facing challenges in meeting the planned production volume for these GPUs. The issue lies in insufficient production planning by AMD, causing a severe shortage not only in the Q4 quarter but potentially extending into the first quarter of 2024, maintaining a state of scarcity.

Both cards launched in November last year with the following MSRPs: 7900 XTX at 7999 RMB and RX 7900 XT at 7399 RMB. The current price from Sapphire’s official store for the Pulse series, which were introduced at AMD MSRP, is 7299 RMB for the RX 7900 XTX and 5799 RMB for the RX 7900 XT card. So from the look so fit, there hasn’t been a price increase, so there’s no need to worry (yet).
