Want to know what’s going on with AMD’s RDNA 3 GPUs? If the rumor is right, the good news is that we should get the announcement of more than one addition to the RX 7000 range next month.
Moore’s Law Is Dead (MLID), a regular source of GPU leaks on YouTube, gave us all the details on AMD’s situation with its remaining RDNA 3 generation graphics cards (add your own skepticism, though, as always with rumours).
Gamescom 2023 in mid-August will supposedly see AMD announce the RX 7800 and 7700 – although the names of these GPUs may still change (even at this late stage).
The RX 7800 is theoretically the full Navi 32 chip with 60 CPUs and a 260W TBP, paired with 16GB of VRAM. And the RX 7700 will be the scaled-down Navi 32 with 48 or 54 CPUs – apparently that decision hasn’t been made yet – with 12GB of VRAM (and a 245W TBP).
Following the reveal of these graphics cards, they should be released in September, we’re told, finally filling AMD’s midrange. So far we’ve had a big gap between the 7900 XT and XTX until RX7600.
According to MLID, another model is planned, and it would be a rather oddly positioned RX 7900 (16 GB).
The RX 7900, a GPU that is a necessary evil?
You may remember that we discussed this RX 7900 before, as potential design of Navi 31 the same size as Navi 32 – it will theoretically have 70 CPUs and the same 260W power consumption as the RX 7800. (It might even be called a 7800 XT).
However, at the moment we’ll only be getting the RX 7800 and 7700 as shown above – possibly with different model names – and that possible 7900 won’t be here for a long time. And even when it does arrive, it will likely be very limited in stock.
Mainly because it will be more about using scrapped chips from the 7900 XT and XTX, and not much else, with graphics card makers apparently not wanting this model at all. So much so that MLID compares it to card makers’ feelings about NVIDIA’s RTX 4060, which is much looked down upon (although some people might say that’s unwarranted, that’s what we hear continuously, with leaked sales figures apparently supporting this to some extent).
What about prices? MLID unfortunately doesn’t have word on where AMD might be planning to introduce these graphics cards, but again, seeing as even the model names aren’t set in stone yet, that’s not not surprising.
What the leaker theorizes is that AMD is putting $550 and $450 price tags on the 7800 and 7700 respectively in the US, inserting these graphics cards to replace the RDNA 2 offerings – now sold out in the US. United – offering slightly better performance than the last – gen, for a little less money and better power efficiency.
In short, these graphics cards are unlikely to be anything revolutionary in terms of value, but their price should be high enough to be a solid proposition, especially since these are new launches. All this is of course only theory, but it makes sense from AMD’s point of view.
Given how much fuss NVIDIA’s RTX 4060 lineup has had since launch, we’re hoping this will encourage AMD will be more keen on lowering prices for its next GPUs.
