AMD reportedly preparing Zen4 based 16-core Threadripper

The new series will once again include a 16 core variant, leak shows.

A benchmark test has recently surfaced showcasing Lenovo’s latest (unreleased) workstation, which is powered by an engineering sample from AMD. This product seems to be built upon the new AMD High-End Desktop (HEDT) platform, marketed under the name Ryzen Threadripper. While AMD has remained tight-lipped about the return of Threadripper for an extended period, a sudden influx of leaks hints at an imminent launch.

This fresh platform will harness the power of the Zen4 architecture and introduce an entirely new socket, potentially variations of SP6 or even SP5. Consequently, the CPU series, codenamed “Storm Peak,” will demand new memory support, specifically DDR5, representing an upgrade over the previous-gen “Chagall” series that supported DDR4.

The system that has come to light appears to sport a 16-core configuration with a base clock of 4.5 GHz, capable of boosting up to 5169 MHz. While the CPU’s official name remains unspecified, hardware leaker Haong Anh Phu suggests that this OPN (product code) corresponds to the AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 7955WX SKU, a previously undisclosed model.

The CPU is to offer much higher singe-core performance (25%) than Threadripper PRO 5955WX. However, the scores in Geekbench database are all over the place, showing 25% to 0% advantage in multicore for newer SKU. Needless to say, one must wait for proper benchmarks to get the definite number.

Naturally, this development raises questions regarding the complete lineup, which is now expected to encompass at least four variants featuring 16, 64, and 96 cores. Potential additional models might occupy the 48, 32, and 24-core niches.

AMD is anticipated to unveil its new Threadripper PRO series by the conclusion of this quarter. However, no official announcements have been made, and there are no scheduled events that seem suited for unveiling this new HEDT platform. It’s worth noting that Threadripper PRO is not designed for gaming, so any expectations of updates at the upcoming Gamescom show should be tempered accordingly.
