Stardust Intelligence, another prominent player in the field, has developed the Astribot S1, which recently gained attention for its demonstrated abilities in folding shirts and pouring wine. At the conference, Stardust robots displayed agility by performing intricate martial arts maneuvers, playing the zither, and writing calligraphy. The company relies heavily on AI-powered imitation learning, enabling its robots to replicate actions after observing them.

Despite these advancements, some critics point out that many demonstrations showcased stiff and slow motions, leaving questions about the robots’ true autonomy. While these limitations highlight the ongoing challenges in developing sophisticated humanoids, the sheer number and variety of robots on display at the conference reflect the industry’s rapid evolution.

One example is Limx Dynamics, a Shenzhen-based startup backed by Alibaba, which has released the P1 robot. Designed for research, the P1 demonstrates remarkable agility and balance, capable of navigating stairs and recovering from external pushes. Limx recently unveiled the P1’s ability to move objects in warehouses and autonomously adjust its task execution based on changing environments.

Other companies at the conference emphasized specialized components, showcasing advanced robot hands, gears, and other crucial building blocks for creating sophisticated humanoids.

A Look to the Future: The Vision for Humanoid Robotics

In the coming years, experts envision a world where humanoid robots take on increasingly complex tasks, potentially assisting humans in everyday life, healthcare, and industry. Shigeki Sugano, president of the Robotics Society of Japan, anticipates that robots will be capable of handling simple household tasks, providing nursing care, and even assisting in medical treatment by 2030. He also foresees the development of robots that can express emotions, albeit not fully autonomous humanoids until after 2050.

However, Sugano highlights the critical challenge of overcoming power limitations. Current humanoid robots often struggle with battery life, requiring recharge after just two hours of operation. This hurdle must be addressed before these robots can truly integrate into human society.
