Tech YouTuber MKBHD’s Encounter with the FBI: A Phone Scam Unfolds

Last week, tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee, popularly known as MKBHD, finally revealed why he was contacted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in 2020. In a video titled "Why the FBI Contacted Me," Brownlee detailed his involvement with a phone scam perpetrated by Escobar Inc., a company known for its flashy, gold-plated smartphones bearing the name of the infamous Colombian drug lord, Pablo Escobar.

Key Takeaways:

  • MKBHD was contacted by the FBI in 2020 regarding Escobar Inc.’s fraudulent activities.
  • The FBI investigated Escobar Inc.’s alleged scheme of sending phones to YouTubers and others for positive reviews while failing to deliver devices to other customers.
  • The company allegedly sold rebranded Samsung Galaxy Folds with gold stickers and rebranded iPhone 11 Pro models under the guise of their own branded devices.
  • Olof Gustafsson, the CEO of Escobar, was arrested in February 2024 on charges of fraud, smuggling, money laundering, and illegal art trading.
  • Brownlee’s revelation sheds light on the deceptive practices of Escobar Inc. and underscores the importance of discerning authenticity in the tech industry.

The Escobar Inc. Scam: A Deeper Dive

The saga began in March 2020 when Brownlee showcased the $399 Pablo Escobar Fold 2, a gold Android phone that resembled the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The device, named after the infamous Colombian drug lord, initially garnered attention for its unconventional name and design. However, it soon became clear that the device was a simple rebranding of the Galaxy Fold, with a gold sticker applied to the back and hinge.

A second phone, called the Pablo Escobar Gold 11 Pro, surfaced, which turned out to be a rebranded iPhone 11 Pro. These revelations raised eyebrows and prompted suspicions about the authenticity and integrity of Escobar Inc.’s products.

The FBI Gets Involved

Following his initial review of the Escobar Fold 2, Brownlee received a visit from FBI agents. The agency sought access to all communications between his team and Escobar Inc. and confiscated the devices as part of their investigation into fraudulent activities involving the company.

Brownlee disclosed that the FBI suspected Escobar Inc. of sending their “luxury” phones to YouTubers and other influencers for favorable reviews while simultaneously failing to deliver devices to paying customers. This practice, known as “shill marketing,” involves paying influencers to promote a product or service in a positive light without disclosing that they have been compensated for their endorsement.

“As I uncovered in my video, [Escobar Inc.] was covering Samsung Galaxy Folds, cheaply with gold stickers, and then shipping them to YouTubers and people who they believed would talk about it positively,” Brownlee stated in his video.

“Those people were getting scammed out of their money. And honestly, in hindsight, I don’t know how they thought they were gonna get away with this,” he added.

The Aftermath: Arrest and Accountability

In February 2024, Olof Gustafsson, the CEO of Escobar, was arrested on charges of fraud, smuggling, money laundering, and illegal art trading. The arrest was a significant development in the case, following a long-standing pattern of allegations that Escobar Inc. failed to deliver phones to customers despite receiving their payments.

Gustafsson’s arrest underscores the weight of the legal consequences that can result from fraudulent practices within the tech industry. It highlights the importance of transparency, authenticity, and ethical behavior in the development and marketing of consumer products.

MKBHD: An Influencer’s Duty and the Impact of Transparency

Brownlee’s experience with the FBI provides a stark reminder of the responsibility that influencers hold in the tech space. His willingness to shed light on the Escobar Inc. scandal serves as a valuable public service, exposing potential scams and protecting consumers from potentially falling victim to such schemes.

The Broader Implications: The Importance of Digital Literacy

The Escobar Inc. case sheds light on the vulnerabilities in the tech industry and the importance of digital literacy. Consumers need to be aware of the potential for deception and be equipped with the tools to discern authenticity and legitimacy, especially in online spaces.

It is crucial to be skeptical of extravagant promises, unfamiliar brand names, and overly positive reviews, especially when encountering products that are marketed aggressively and lack transparent information about their origins and manufacturing processes.

Moving Forward: Building Trust and Accountability

The Escobar Inc. saga serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of marketing gimmicks and the importance of ethical practices in the tech industry. The case underscores the need for increased transparency in product development and marketing, along with the accountability of tech companies for their actions.

Moving forward, it is essential for both influencers and consumers to prioritize authentic content and informed decision-making. By remaining critical and vigilant, we can contribute to a more trustworthy and ethical digital landscape.
